Aug 21, 2017 Phill Hellmuth
The Wall Street Journal called with an assignment to shoot Poker legend, Phil Hellmuth. At first I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to capture the “true Phil” at a poker table, so it was relieving to learn he was up for our photo session in his Aria sky suite away from the crowds, and with spectacular 180 degree views. Who knew the biggest hurdle of the shoot would be blocking out those Las Vegas sun rays!
Two of my favorite setups of the day showcase Phil’s personality and positive attitude. The lighting, pose and composition of each shot really reflected back the image I had in my mind. When Phil threw 4 aces at the camera, I was able to capture them perfectly flying out of his hand which elicited a tandem “hell yeah!” from us both as we high-fived.
I’ve met plenty of big personalities over the years as a professional photographer. It’s always important to me that an effort is made to connect on some kind of personal level, and it’s always appreciated when candor and honesty are reciprocated. This time was no different as Phil and I conversed and shared similar opinions on mental attitude and keeping a marriage happy and honest. Phil has a new book coming out soon called Positivity and I’m looking forward to ordering my copy. Capturing energy is my jam, sharing positive energy in this book is his.
